Steiff Company founder, Margarete Steiff was born in Germany on July 24, 1847. In 1849, she took ill with polio at the age of 1½ and spent the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair. She began selling garments and household articles that she had made herself in a newly formed ready-to-wear felt clothing establishment. In 1880, the first Steiff animal was created, an elephant made of felt, that was intended for use as a pincushion. The elephant was the first soft-filled fabric toy animal and soon became very popular with children, who enjoyed playing with it. By 1886, 5,170 elephants were sold and other animals were added to the product range. The first bear was created in 1902 and the first "Teddy" bear was created for Teddy Roosevelt in 1903. We love the history and nostalgia of the Steiff Collections! |
